Government STC Update

Commercial Solar Just Became More Accessible

The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme now includes eligible solar PV systems above 100 kW and up to 1 MW, installed from 1 October 2026.

Small-scale Technology Certificates, or STCs, can help reduce upfront installation costs when certificate rights are assigned in exchange for a discount. Eligibility depends on the project, required approvals and any existing or related solar systems.

The Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme cap is now 1MW.

How Your Business Could Benefit

A New Opportunity for Commercial Solar

Reduce Upfront Investment

STCs can provide an upfront financial benefit rather than requiring businesses to wait for certificates to be generated over time.

More Scope to Invest in Larger Solar

Sites previously constrained around the 100kW threshold can reconsider the optimum system size.

Potential for a Faster Payback

Reduced net project cost combined with electricity savings can improve project economics.

Size Your Solar to Match Your Demand

Rather than designing specifically around the historic 100kW incentive threshold.

Who This Affects

Is Commercial Solar Right for Your Business?

If your site has high daytime electricity consumption, significant roof area or an existing solar system that may be undersized, this change could materially alter the business case for solar.

Your Solar System Doesn’t Have to Stop at 100 kW

Size Your Solar Around Your
Business Demand

Old Thinking

"Keep the system around 100 kW to retain STC eligibility."

New Opportunity

"Model the system around the site's actual consumption, available roof area, network capacity and commercial return."

If your business needs more than 100 kW of solar, the expanded scheme creates an opportunity to reassess your options.

We consider electricity usage, available space, existing equipment and network requirements when recommending capacity. STC eligibility and network connection approval are separate requirements—both need to be addressed.

KLUEM can assess multiple system sizes — 100kW, 250kW, 500kW and up to 1MW — to determine which delivers the strongest commercial outcome.

Make More of Your Solar With Battery Storage

Use Solar After Hours

Store surplus daytime generation for evening operations or periods of low solar output.

Manage Peak Demand

A suitably sized and controlled battery may reduce peak grid demand where your tariff includes demand charges.

Plan Backup for Essential Equipment

An appropriate backup configuration can supply selected equipment during an outage. Available power and stored energy determine what can run and for how long.

Questions About Commercial Solar?

The Australian Government has expanded the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme to include eligible solar PV systems above 100 kW and up to 1 MW, installed from 1 October 2026. This gives more businesses access to STCs that can help reduce upfront installation costs, subject to the scheme’s eligibility requirements.

No. Eligibility depends on the installation and its relationship to any existing solar, as well as the relevant accreditation, approvals and connection requirements. KLUEM can review your project before making a recommendation.

Small-scale Technology Certificates are tradeable certificates created by eligible renewable energy systems, which can be sold to provide an upfront financial benefit toward the cost of a system.

For eligible solar systems, STCs are based on expected electricity generation over a set period and can help reduce upfront installation costs. LGCs are created over time by accredited renewable power stations, based on the eligible electricity they actually generate.

An eligible expansion may qualify, but the assessment must account for existing and related installations. Support for a qualifying addition applies to the added capacity, not the original system again.

The regulator expects applications to open in mid to late November 2026 for eligible installations from 1 October. Confirm how the timing affects the discount in your project quote.

Not automatically. Eligibility depends on your site's electrical infrastructure, roof or ground space, and the final scheme requirements once confirmed.

Yes. Our assessment starts with your electricity bills and consumption data before we model any system size.
